Using the parameters suggested here http://www.imagemagick.org/discourse-server/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=23747#p100643 I get the following results, so I don't think this issue can be resolved by tweaking the unsharpen parameters. convert example.png -unsharp 12x6+0.5+0 -background black -flatten out.png ...
