IMHO the checkerboard pattern should be there by default OR the clicks shouldn't be intercepted.

I realize this, but isn't that quite hard on a transparent gif with just a few non-transparent pixels?

hi, I reported this Debian bug: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=758276 But it may take some time until it's picked up by the over-worked package maintainer(s), so I post it here.
