I'm having the exactly same problem. If I run gs command directly on shell without the -dGraphicsAlphaBits=4 parameter, it works fine. It is also working with -dGraphicsAlphaBits=1. -dGraphicsAlphaBits=2 and -dGraphicsAlphaBits=4 hangs Ghostscript. I am using Ghostscript 9.21 and Imagemagick 6.7.7 ...

By the way, how did you update the version 6.7.7 to 6.8 in Ubuntu? I tried to follow some of the suggestions present on this website, but those did not work. Could you please give a clue on how to update the version in Ubuntu 14.something? You can download the official binary package for linux x64 ...

The problem was the Ghostscript version, 9.15 is not enough. Version 9.16 fixed the error.
