Not properly installed on OS X

Questions and postings pertaining to the usage of ImageMagick regardless of the interface. This includes the command-line utilities, as well as the C and C++ APIs. Usage questions are like "How do I use ImageMagick to create drop shadows?".

Not properly installed on OS X

Post by dgpeters »

I installed ImageMagick 6.9.0 on my OS X Mavericks iMac (newest 5K model). After a few hours I realized I probably also needed to install XQuartz, so I did that too. And I rebooted. But ImageMagick still won't recognize any file I throw at it. Here's an example of what I get:
$ export MAGICK_HOME="$HOME/ImageMagick-6.9.0"
$ export PATH="$MAGICK_HOME/bin:$PATH"
$ export DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH="$MAGICK_HOME/lib/"
$ identify -verbose /tmp/f1.png
identify: no decode delegate for this image format `PNG' @ error/constitute.c/ReadImage/501.
$
So I did research and the experts asked for this command to be displayed:
$ convert -version
Version: ImageMagick 6.9.0-1 Q16 x86_64 2014-11-24 http://www.imagemagick.org
Copyright: Copyright (C) 1999-2014 ImageMagick Studio LLC
Features: DPC
Delegates (built-in): bzlib xml zlib

$
You can see that some "delegates" are missing. They also said to try this command to help troubleshoot:
$ convert -list configure

Path: [built-in]

Name Value
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FEATURES
NAME ImageMagick
QuantumDepth 16
convert: unable to access configure file `configure.xml' @ warning/configure.c/GetConfigureOptions/706.
$
I'm not really sure what that means. They also said to try this command:

Code: Select all

$ convert -list configure

Path: [built-in]

Name           Value
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

But I did read another web page (viewtopic.php?f=3&t=24326) which suggests that this is a known problem with the Mac port of ImageMagick. So I'm wondering if this is my problem or not. All I want is a documented way to get ImageMagick to work on OS X.

I know nothing about Macs, but I notice you haven't said how you installed ImageMagick. Clearly, something is missing. It can't even find configure.xml. Does that exist in MAGICK_HOME?

Is this the information you were asking me for?
$ ls $HOME/ImageMagick-6.9.0
bin etc include lib share
$
I noticed that BMP was in the list so for now I'm able to manipulate BMP files, which is useful for now. but still, can we make this work?

I installed ImageMagick using a standard Mac OS X download image. Somewhere on this page: http://www.imagemagick.org/script/download.php about 30 minutes ago. I could start over if you want.

Best to install from http://www.imagemagick.org/script/insta ... e.php#unix if you want to install from source. But you first have to install all the delegate libraries you might want such as for jpg, png, tiff, ghostscript, freetype, fontconfig.

My delegates are listed from convert -version as

Version: ImageMagick 6.9.0-2 Q16 x86_64 2014-12-27 http://www.imagemagick.org
Copyright: Copyright (C) 1999-2015 ImageMagick Studio LLC
Features: DPC Modules
Delegates (built-in): bzlib cairo fftw fontconfig freetype gslib jbig jng jp2 jpeg lcms lqr ltdl lzma openexr png ps rsvg tiff webp x xml zlib

but you may not need them all.

Or you can install from binary at http://www.imagemagick.org/script/binary-releases.php if you are on the current Mac OSX version, which gives you most of the needed delegates automatically.

Or you can install from MacPorts.

I install all my delegates from MacPorts but install IM from source. See viewtopic.php?f=1&t=21502&p=88202&hilit ... rts#p88202

I am using OSX Snow Leopard, so have not upgraded to the latest Mac OSX.
