I'm trying to convert 900-some TIFF and EPS files to PNG, in Cygwin, and getting a "no images" error. As far as I can tell, everything is current, and I only have the current TIFF library (libtiff6) installed. Same problem with EPS. The image files seem good.
What am I missing?

"convert" needs both input filename, and output filename. If you want PNG output:DHS wrote:$ convert -ping fri080322700.tif

That was pretty dumb of me. I thought that "no images defined" meant that it couldn't read the input image, not that the output format wasn't defined. Thank you!

Just to be clear. -ping does not mean output PNG format. It means do not read the pixel data, but do read the meta data.
And as snibgo said, convert needs both an input and output image specified, though the output could be null: or info:. But, identify only needs an input. So for getting information from your meta data in an image, you can do either of the following
