What does retro gray look like? What does your gif look like? More information is needed as to what you are trying to do.

Try

convert image.gif -coalesce -colorspace gray -layers optimize new_image.gif
Please, always provide your IM version and platform when asking questions, since syntax may differ.

Also provide your exact command line and your images, if possible.
