Is there anyway to know gif animation sequence?

When I read a animate gif into memory, is there any programming api to know how each frame inside this gif file be played in terms of sequence? like a gif have 5 frames, it is played like 1->2->4. How could I retrieve this information?

Gif only plays in the order given with a posible loop to start at the end.

It can NOT skip, jump, or reverse the order of the frames. It isn't a DVD after all.
