hexa image mirage effect

I just saw this lens effect. I'd like to be able to reproduce it with IM.. Any ideas?

What is the effect? It is not clear to me. Please clarify. As best as I can tell, it looks like simply taking one picture and replicating it and alpha masked compositing it in various places. See -compose and composite. http://www.imagemagick.org/Usage/compose/
