AI Illustrator file show hidden layers

I am using IM and ghostscript 8.15 to convert Illustrator AI files to jpgs. I find that layers that are hidden in Illustrator app appear in the converted jpg. Does anybody know if there is a way to have ghostscript hide the layers that are hidden in Illustrator? I tried with GS9.00 using gsview 4.9 and got the same effect.
