Decompose - Background Removal

In Gimp you have background/forground extract tool and I think Photoshop has it as well as some other programs.

The Gimp version is based on "Siox" http://www.siox.org/

The Siox library is pretty impressive. Any way to get that in IM or command line?

The reviews don't give me the impression of it being 'impressive', though I would like to study the algorithm more.

In IM you can use any technique you can dream up. Some methods have been exampled

I tried it on ImageJ and got terrible results and extremely slow processing times. It was pretty much useless (at least the ImageJ implementation).
