TIFF -> JPG resolution (density) conversion error

Hi,

I'm trying to convert TIFF -image to JPG -image with the following command, but the density just doesn't seem to change:

convert source.tif -resize 435x290 -units PixelsPerInch -density 72x72 -quality 100 target.jpg
Source TIFF is 300 dpi, 5616x3744 pixels, 60.2MB file.
What I'm trying to do is to resize the image to 435x290 pixels and 72 dpi resolution with 100% quality. After conversion the JPG is always 300 dpi (checked in Photoshop CS 3 and Windows Explorer, because these are the tools my client uses).


Any help on what am I doing wrong?

what do you get from

identify -verbose source.tif


Tiff may have two resolutions specified, one in a tiff meta tag and that probably won't be changed by IM.

What do you get from your output image

identify -verbose output

I suspect that the IM density will be 72, but the tiff resolution will be unchanged from


tiff:XResolution: 300/1
tiff:YResolution: 300/1


Then photoshop will see the tiff resolution and not the IM changed resolution and think it is still 300.

As I said earlier, I don't think IM will change any of the meta data relating to tiff or EXIF, etc. But you would need to hear more from one of the IM developers.

What version of IM are you using?


try without the resize.

And with that listing we can see the result you were suggesting before. Tiff -resolution is 300 dpi and true image resolution 72 dpi and therefore the converted images are ok?

I guess it depends upon the app reading the image. I suspect photoshop will still look to its Tiff:resolution of 300:1.

I don't know how other apps will see it. You could try other viewers (GIMP, Firefox, Safari, etc) or just print the file and see if it is now at 72 dpi or not.

Alternately, add -strip to your command and it will remove the tiff: meta data and all other meta data. See if that helps (as long as you don't need any of the other meta data).

Metadata isn't really needed in the result pictures and the option -strip solved the problem.

So this was after all a Photoshop/Explorer "bug" (difference in reading image data) instead of IM bug.

The order of the two settings should not matter as that is all they are image meta-data settings.
Only one operator I know actually looks at those settings, -resample.

Otherwise they are saved (according to the image file format if it can save those settings, or used for fonts and some vector image formats.
