The solution to this bug is addressed in ImageMagick 7 Alpha. We did our best to have an orderly version 6 command line but we had to live with certain deficiencies so as not to break existing command line behaviors. ImageMagick version 7 is a complete command-line rewrite that addresses the deficiencies in the version 6 command line.
