Most algorithms in ImageMagick are scanline oriented-- meaning they process one scanline at a time to conserve memory. However, BMP tries to allocate the entire image in memory which most likely is the cause of your memory exception. A workaround is to convert the image to another format that does not require the entire image be allocated in memory (i.e. PNG) or another is to resize the image before you save it to BMP:

• convert -limit area 0 panel2.psb -resize 10% panel2.bmp

Did you get a chance to look at the download?

My problem is is that I need to run a full size file thru another program that converts it into a 1bit bmp after making various adjustments uniformly across the the file, and then i need to split the file into 3 equal sections. Problem is if I send the file into the adjustment program and then upscale it will distort the end result.

What is the largest size of bmp imagemagick can create?

Can I do something like increase my memory or some how dummy it into using the harddrive as memory?

What if I convert a smaller photoshop file to a bmp and then scale up the bmp to full size, before I process it thru the other program would that work?

We can convert the image to BMP but our system has 144GB of memory. You would probably need about 4 GB of memory to convert the image with the Q8 version of ImageMagick to BMP.

Reducing the size of the image and then scaling up is not recommended because you lose information when you scale down.

We recommend converting the image first to some intermediate format such as PNG, TIFF, or JPEG and then converting that to BMP. That of course will only work if you find a utility that only loads a scanline of the image at a time rather than loading the entire image in memory.

What would I need to do to upgrade it to run the file thru imagemagick

Pretty sure the verion of imagemagick i'm using now is 6.6 (ImageMagick-6.6.0-6-Q16-windows-dll.exe file) How would I go about getting theQ8 version, will I need visual studio?

From what I understand the file originates from an image that is 38.4"x8" at 300ppi and has been scaled up in photoshop.
If I get hold of that file will that help things, bearing in mind that I need to process it thru the other program at full size.
If I can get this smaller file size going this weekend it would really help as I have seriousy messed up on this (i'm about a weekbehind schedule as I am)

That smiley occurs because the text is an 8 followed immediately by a right paren. If it was 8 ) with a space, then the smiley would not show.

Here is the 8 followed by the right paren as typed, but shows as the smiley

We have found over the years that almost all ImageMagick commands that fail under Windows works just fine under Linux.

Otherwise we do not have any other specific recommendations.

I have a pc here with Fedora set up on it, its a fairly old one have no idea how much ram it has but if I get that going would I need loads of memory or could i use the hard drive to doit, and if so could I usea usb harddriveto gain extra capacity?

Or do I need to go and pickup a pc inthe morning and set it up with Fedora and some other programs?

I see from start up it is redhat, Fedora 2.16.18-1.2798.fc6, but i do not have a password currently so am going to have to figure out how to reset. Maybe easier just overwriting the hard drive.

Magick any advice please because I have to do whatever I can to sort my problem out

Using CS4Photoshop

I created 2 files
a) 85,000 x 12,000 pixels 1pixel/inch
b) 85,039 x 11,811 1pixel/inch


Photoshop CS4
would only save in these formats
a) Tiff
b) Photoshop Raw
c) Large Document Format

You are probably trying to save to BMP outside it's range limits.

If this is the case a better error message might be BMP dimension limits are X by Y which this file exceeds.

IF CS4Photoshop can not save with these dimensions I would not think Imagemagick would NOT be able to save as well, useless CS4 has a bug in it's range checking.

Photoshop moves to a large format file when pixels in x or y direction are 30,000 or more. So you could do a file 29,999 x 29,999 and save it as whatever u want, any larger and you are limited to the 3 file formats.
Image has been made in Photoshop but in a smaller scale which can be saved as a bmp, and was then enlarged in photoshop to full size.
My understanding is that there is no real limit to a size of a bmp other than practicality- could be wrong about this.


Is it worth trying to enlarge file from a smaller bmp using imagemagick - or would same problem occure?

Any possible solutions will be tried - at the moment trying to hack password to get onto pc with fedora loaded.
