Try the following, they seem to work for me.
convert \( lena.jpg -resize 100x100! -write lena100.jpg \) \
-clone 0 -delete 0--2 -resize 50x50! lena50.jpg
convert \( lena.jpg -write mpr:lena -delete 0 \) \
\( mpr:lena -resize 100x100! -write lena100.jpg +delete \) \
mpr:lena -resize 50x50! lena50.jpg
