inner shadow?

Hi all
Looking for a way to use convert. to add an inner shadow in the same way photoshop does to a square png with alpha.
below is an over exaggerated version of what i need to achieve

can you explain how Photoshop does it? then perhaps someone can figure out the equivalent commands.

it's just a style in photoshop but the tool works with the following options. direction shadow comes from. in my example it right at 0 degrees or from the top at 12 o clock. then a distance choice and size choice that just softens the edges and of course opacity. It' pretty much identical to drop shadow but rather under the object it's within the object. is that any help?
