Congratulations you managed to work out some of th emajor key points about IM that people often ask the forums about.
One point though. The YUM/RPM package management system does not try to install all the library's and basically they are mostly optional. you don't need them unless you plan to actually use a image format that requires the library.
However most of the libraries get installed through dependancys due to other packages anyway so usally it does not matter.
For more information I suggest you look at IM examples, and start with the top page, basics, files, formats, text, thumbnails, canvases, color, cropping, etc...
This will solve most of the problems you encounter.
