Have you tried the latest release, ImageMagick 6.4.9-2? It includes support for OpenMP which permits ImageMagick to run in parallel on a multi-core system. Without OpenMP support, recent versions of ImageMagick might run a bit slower than your version because it includes support for alpha blending when resizing to prevent halo's for images that are not completely opaque. Otherwise the only other option is to use compile time options such as -O3. You can see how Ubuntu built ImageMagick with this command:
