error running ./configure while installing imagemagick

Hi,
I am trying to install Imagemagick-6.5.2-8 and PerlMagick 6.4.0 on fedora (locally without root access).
when i do a ./configure after cd ImageMagick, i get this error
configure: error: no acceptable ld found in $PATH
I tried adding /usr/bin/ld to the path
but the same error persists
running make on perlmagick gives a series of errors
make: *** [Magick.o] Error 1
i am stuck at this.Pointers to installing Imagemagick and Perlmagick will be really helpful.
