Proper installation of ImageMagick and Ghostscript Linux

Newbie to PHP and ImageMagick. I've read several posts regarding installation problems of ImageMagick and Ghoscript and was hoping someone could tell me the correct procedure of properly installing these without conflict.
We have a Linux server running CentOS release 5.3 and PHP Version 5.2.9.
Amongst all the great features ImageMagick has, I need to utilize the thumbnail creation of pdf files feature for pdfs that are periodically uploaded to our server.
