I do not see -average listed at the top of the options page, although it is listed at the end of the A section down the page. Has -average been completely deprecated from the current IM version and replaced completely by -evaluate-sequence. If so, then I need to edit some of my scripts. What are your intentions for -average? Will it go away if not already so?

Some options are deprecated such as -average but they will no go away until we bump the major version to ImageMagick 7.0.0.
