[fixed] Wording of append documentation

Post by broucaries »

From https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/629602

The -append option for convert can append images top to bottom or left to right. To do the latter you need to use append with a + in front of it so +append. While I can understand the necessity of keeping the manual brief I believe that "-append append an image sequence" is far too brief. Either modifying -append to read "append an image sequence top to bottom" or doing that and adding in +append would make this argument much clearer.

We changed the docs to say
  • -append append an image sequence top to bottom (use +append for left to right)

That documentation is a reference documentation. And their is actually a lot more that it should mention as a reference documentation. For example as of IM v6.4.7-1 the append uses -gravity
for image alignment.

However for practical documentation involving actual examples See IM examples, Laying multiple images, Append...
http://www.imagemagick.org/Usage/layers/#append

ASIDE: Technically append image alignment should be set from a 'justification' setting. However currently their is no such setting, and gravity (a positioning setting) also includes the justification (alignment at that position) component. a split of gravity into two separated but closely related settings, has been an ongoing request for a very long time.

Their is a proposal for an expansion of append into a 'image layout' operator that allows multiple styles of organising multiple images. for example into 'lines' or 'columns' of images with a
maximum length and justification options. or an 'array' or 'grid' layout such as what montage
provides, with a fixed cell size. Such a layout operator would also to allow for inter-image spacing.
See proposal at http://www.imagemagick.org/Usage/bugs/future/#layout

Dear antony,

We know really well the problem of documentation of imagemagick

And we have even be prepared to package a offline version of your wonderfull site for our users.

However we are still stuck due to licencing reason. Could you clarify the licence of your web site ?

Thank you

Actually I don't have a specific licence written out.

But you can follow the same licence as ImageMagick.

You are welcome to make a copy, others have. If you let me know the URL I will include a link
on the top level page (under the logo).

NOTE IM Examples is constantly being updated. As such you should think about methods of updating the copy you make.

Dear anthony could you send us a formal confirmation ?

Sending a mail to 549304@bugs.debian.org will do the job explaining the licence and what you do not want to change it (my legal team is quite strict)
