Hello,
The pan icon is still not working properly. (Checked again in 6.6.2).
Try this :
display smaller_than_screen.jpg larger_than_screen.jpg
Hit space to show the second file, the pan icon doesn't appear.
if you do :
display larger_than_screen.jpg smaller_than_screen.jpg
The pan icon is displayed for the first one, but doesn't disappear for the second.
I signaled this on a gentoo list :
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=271374 and was told o report upstream, so, this is it.
Sincerely,
savi.

Better still it may be time to junk the 'pan' window completely!
Most program these days use a mouse pointer as a 'hand' to grab the display and
let you scroll the window.
However one alternative is to use a -resize 'WxH>' to limit the maximum size of the
displayed image. More menu options for resiing images may also be useful such as
1:1 or screen limits, may be a nice addition.
'zoom' during 'point picking' another.
Want we really need is a programmer willing to work on 'display'.
PS: I use "display" myself for some things, especially if 'piping images'. however other times I use a old but still very popular and useful image displayer "xv". I have also used "GQView" and soem of its more recent variations, and even just the default image viewers provided by Gnome. Basically I use what is 'useful' for the task at hand.

Not sure I understand if this is the same, but I get a new window that pans if one presses the option key and clicks and holds down on the left mouse button in Mac OSX Tiger when I do
display someimage

Option is a special Mac key not available on other computers. Hmmmm....
I can find any change to mouse button actions when using them with any of the shift keys, (like alt)
mouse button one -- main menu pop up/down
mouse button two (middle button) -- pop up a magnify pixel window (good for locating a specific pixel or color)
mouse button three -- pop up a temorary 'short cut' menu.
None of the keys provide panning unless the mouse is in the unwanted panning window.

When opening the magnify window, moving the mouse in the normal size original window causes the magnify view to pan. That was what I thought he wanted. I have never seen any pan capability in the main display window, but I don't display very large images.

I did that already but could not make it pan.
