possible bug -quiet IM 6.7.9.6 Q16

IM 6.7.9.6 Q16 Mac OSX Snow Leopard
I was under the impression that -quiet should only return my custom error message and not any other messages. Do I misunderstand?
infile="bogus.png" # file does not exist
convert -quiet "$infile" $dir/bogus.mpc ||
echo "--- FILE $thefile DOES NOT EXIST OR IS NOT AN ORDINARY FILE, NOT READABLE OR HAS ZERO SIZE ---"
convert: unable to open image `bogus.png': No such file or directory @ error/blob.c/OpenBlob/2638.
convert: unable to open file `bogus.png' @ error/png.c/ReadPNGImage/3741.
convert: no images defined `/bogus.mpc' @ error/convert.c/ConvertImageCommand/3044.
