Is there a deeper reason why the official version number differs from the one reported by 'identify -version'?

where are you finding the "official version number? perhaps there was an update shortly after you download.

The Windows binaries sometime get out of sync with the official release. We'll get updates as soon as we can, perhaps by this weekend.
