Black artifacts with modulate

Hi,
i am a long time imagemagick user and never saw this problem before.
Lately, when i do a simple call like this to reduce saturation of an image:
Code: Select all
convert -modulate 100,60 1.jpg test.jpg
All images have black artifacts in it as you can see in this example (in the water):
http://imgur.com/oFWgm9m
Tried it with gif and png as well, same result.
Any ideas?
I am using
ImageMagick 6.9.3-0 Q16 x86_64 2016-01-15 on archlinux 64bit.
Greetings

Please post an input image that shows the problem. Does it also happen when you use three arguments to "-modulate"?

Evening,
it happens with all images but here is an input:
http://imgur.com/BmbAyb2
I also noticed that it happens with an older imagemagick version, where i am absolutely sure it worked with before (had an old package).
Yep, happens with three parameters as well.

With IM 6.9.2-5 on Windows 8.1 this command ...
Code: Select all
convert BmbAyb2.jpg -modulate 100,60 x.png
... doesn't make black marks.
Your syntax is wrong. "-modulate" should be after the image is read, not before. Does the problem still occur with the correct syntax?

Your JPG is
JPEG* JPEG rw- Joint Photographic Experts Group JFIF format (80)
JPG* JPEG rw- Joint Photographic Experts Group JFIF format (80)
and your PNG has two versions, which may cause conflicts. I am not an expert on that.
PNG* PNG rw- Portable Network Graphics (libpng 1.6.16,1.6.21)
My system has a higher version of JPG
JPEG* JPEG rw- Joint Photographic Experts Group JFIF format (90)
JPG* JPEG rw- Joint Photographic Experts Group JFIF format (90)
And my PNG is between your two versions
PNG* PNG rw- Portable Network Graphics (libpng 1.6.20)
I do not know if any of this is relevant, but you might try resolving the dual PNG versions and upgrade your JPG version.

Well, not sure what the versions means exactly. Maybe API compatibility or something.

But you also have two versions libpng 1.6.20 and 1.6.21. I do not think IM should be using two versions at the same time. But I will defer to the PNG experts on that.

"(libpng-1.6.20,1.6.21)" is OK. It just means ImageMagick was built with libpng-1.6.20 and that the libpng shared library was later updated to 1.6.21.

Thx for the clarification glennrp.
Could it be related to nvidia / "the CPU architecture" somehow?
I got pretty new hardware recently.
Intel skylake and nvidia GForce GTX 980.

What is the output from convert -version? Is OpenCL enabled?

Output:
Code: Select all
$ convert -version
Version: ImageMagick 6.9.3-0 Q16 x86_64 2016-01-15 http://www.imagemagick.org
Copyright: Copyright (C) 1999-2016 ImageMagick Studio LLC
License: http://www.imagemagick.org/script/license.php
Features: Cipher DPC HDRI Modules OpenCL OpenMP
Delegates (built-in): bzlib cairo fontconfig freetype gslib jng jp2 jpeg lcms lqr ltdl lzma openexr pangocairo png ps rsvg tiff webp wmf x xml zlib
Here are the configure options:
Code: Select all
./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --with-modules \
--enable-hdri --with-wmf --with-openexr --with-xml \
--with-webp --with-gslib --with-gs-font-dir=/usr/share/fonts/Type1 \
--with-perl --with-perl-options="INSTALLDIRS=vendor" --with-lqr --with-rsvg \
--enable-opencl --with-openjp2 --without-gvc --without-djvu --without-autotrace \
--without-jbig --without-fpx --without-dps --without-fftw --with-gcc-arch=x86-64
Looks like opencl is enabbled.
