I was using ImageMagick 6.7.7 on debian 7 (wheezy). It was working fine. But when i switched to debian 8 (jessie) and installed imagemagick 6.8.9, convert is not working properly. Its not merging gif image with another image.

It is possible that your 6.8.9.x has a bug. That is an old version, why not upgrade to the latest IM 6
