Add -debug trace to your command line to localize where the bus error is being generated.
You need to post a URL to a sample image, the complete version number of IM you are using, and your convert command for me to be able to offer a useful suggestion. I have used IM under Mac OS X successfully with mulit-GigaByte images. Are you on a PowerPC G5 or an Intel Mac? I use both. It would be worth downloading and trying the Mac OS X universal binary for ImageMagick from the site below. That is what I use.
